Poetry Writing and Poetry Reading Contests 2019: Classroom-Based Activities vis-a-vis 2019 National Arts Month Celebration
The Poetry Writing and Poetry Reading Contests 2019 were organized by George P. Lumayag, Teacher III of Dalaguete National High School, Poblacion, Dalaguete, Cebu as encouraged by the Office of the Schools Division Superintendent, Cebu Province Division. This encouragement was stipulated in the Division Memorandum No. 028, s. 2019 and such memorandum adopted the Regional Memorandum No. 0028, s. 2019 dated January 14, 2019 and DepEd Memorandum No. 634, s. 2019 dated January 03, 2019 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 683 dated January 28, 1991, entitled Declaring the Month of February of Every Year as National Arts Month. These offices encouraged all concerned to undertake activities that promote local cultures and arts in the region.
The teacher-organizer had integrated such contests from his regular teaching in English 8 and Media and Information Literacy (MIL) 12. Winners of the contests would receive medals. Participants of these contests were the Grade 8-Eucalyptus, Olive, Gemelina, Grade 12 ABM and Grade 12 TVL B. Poetry Writing was scheduled on February 27 in the five (5) different classrooms; Poetry Reading was also scheduled on February 28, 2019 at their respective classrooms.
Participants were only allowed to bring a dictionary, pencil and short-sized bond paper/s for Poetry Writing Contest; however, participants were given the chance to choose a contest piece which is written by George P. Lumayag, published in PoetryScoup.com @ https://www.poetrysoup.com/poems_poets/poems_by_poet.aspx?ID=115181 in the Poetry Reading Category. These were the Criteria for Judging in Poetry Writing such as: (1) Relevance to the Theme which is 50%; (2) Creativity/Style and Originality which is 30%; (3) Coherence of Form and Structure (harmony of words, presentation) which is 10%; and (4) Clarity of Imagery and Language which is 10%, total of 100%. In addition, these were also the Criteria for Judging in Poetry Reading such as: (1) Stage Presence and Presentation which is 50%; (2) Poise and Spontaneity of the Reading Piece which is 30%; (3) Intonation, Poetic Expression and a Clear Insight into the Poet’s Intention which is 10%; and (4) Clarity of Spoken Words and Diction which is 10%, total of 100%. The locally coined theme of the contests was "Empower the Students to Change the World Through the Power of Words".
